Why Marketing matters for Information Systems

  • Information Systems' firms need to market their products (software, technology, and consulting services) and need marketing professionals and research to maximize their reach and offerings.
  • Marketing-oriented information systems, such as data warehousing, data mining, customer relationship management systems, etc., create demand for new software developments and extensions including research that enables the storage and efficient retrieval of large quantities of information.
  • Information Systems' professionals need marketing for everyday and long-term functioning. Information Systems' departments need to evaluate how best they can add value to different departments in an organization (i.e., do marketing research).
  • Those in the field of Information Systems need to design systems that can actively lower costs of operations of all departments by using one marketing function of getting information and using another marketing function of informing relevant people.
  • The value added by excellent Information Systems will not only improve the overall profitability of the firm but will raise the "brand image" of Information Systems' professionals in an organization and in society (which is a marketing objective).
